After the Peace Dollar series paused following 1928, the coin returned in 1934. The Philadelphia issue became especially meaningful because it represented the series’ return during the Depression era, when American confidence, money, and national identity all carried added weight. With a mintage of 954,057, the 1934 Philadelphia Peace Dollar was the last Peace Dollar issue struck under one million pieces.
Philadelphia Return places the 1934 Peace Dollar in a restrained civic setting: winter trees, stone architecture, damp pavement, and a quiet historic Philadelphia atmosphere. The mood is deliberately dignified rather than celebratory. This was not the exuberant first-year high relief of 1921; it was a sober return, a coin struck in a nation still working its way through hardship.
Message from the Artist
The Peace Dollar has always felt different from other American silver dollars. It is not only a coin of commerce; it is a coin of memory, aspiration, and national mood. For this series, I wanted each year to feel like a chapter rather than just a date.
The 1921 High Relief carries the optimism of a new beginning. The 1927-S feels elusive and coastal, shaped by San Francisco fog. The 1934 Philadelphia issue reflects a quieter, more resilient America during the Depression era. The 1935-S closes the original series with warmth, reflection, and a sense of final light.
Each composition was created to honor the coin first, but also to give it a place — a setting, an atmosphere, and a story worthy of display.
The result is a print built around resilience. The Peace Dollar’s Liberty remains calm and resolute, while the eagle reverse stands as a reminder that the word PEACE carried a different emotional weight in 1934 than it had in 1921.
