Inspired by Archibald Willard’s iconic The Spirit of ’76, this Mintmark composition places three Revolutionary-era musicians in a smoky golden march, carrying the sound, sacrifice, and resolve of a young nation forward.
The artwork integrates the 1776–2026 Emerging Liberty Dime as a pair of ghosted coin apparitions within the battlefield atmosphere. The obverse, featuring Liberty emerging in profile, appears quietly in the upper left; the reverse eagle and “Liberty Over Tyranny” message rise from the smoke on the right. The coins are intentionally subtle — not pasted onto the scene, but woven into the light and haze as symbols of memory, independence, and national inheritance.
Willard’s original concept began as a lighter, humorous sketch of three musicians. But while preparing the work for the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, Willard — a Civil War veteran and former carriage painter from Ohio — transformed it into a profound statement of American patriotism. He drew from personal life: his father, Rev. Samuel Willard, modeled the central elderly drummer; his boyhood friend and fellow veteran Hugh Mosher posed as the fifer; and young Henry Kelsey Devereux, whom Willard noticed at a military drill, became the drummer boy.
What began as a local character study became a national emblem. With Revolutionary ancestry behind it and the fresh memory of Civil War sacrifice still heavy in the American mind, The Spirit of ’76 spoke to both the founding generation and the generation that had just preserved the Union.
