The coin featured in the painting is an 1872 Liberty Seated Silver Dollar, part of the Liberty Seated dollar series struck from 1840 to 1873. Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the obverse shows Liberty seated with a shield, pole, cap, surrounding stars, and the date below. The Philadelphia 1872 issue carried no mintmark, which is reflected in this artwork. PCGS lists the 1872 Liberty Seated Dollar as a 90% silver, 10% copper coin with a 38.10 mm diameter, 26.73 gram weight, and a reported mintage of 1,105,500.
