Description:
In December 1944, General George S. Patton’s Third Army was stalled by relentless rain, freezing mud, and exhaustion in Lorraine. With the weather crippling movement and morale, Patton turned to his Chief Chaplain, James H. O’Neill, and asked for a prayer for fair weather.
O’Neill wrote a prayer asking for the rains to cease, for strength in battle, and for justice and peace. Patton ordered 250,000 copies printed and distributed to the men of the Third Army. Days later, Hitler launched the offensive that became the Battle of the Bulge. As the crisis deepened, Patton’s army made its historic pivot toward Bastogne, and when the skies finally cleared, Allied airpower could return in force.
Patton’s Prayer for Peace captures that moment between storm and deliverance: soldiers standing in mud and rain, prayer cards in hand, as Patton points toward the break in the clouds. Above the distant tanks appears the ghostly obverse of the 1776–2026 Peace Dollar, a heavenly apparition tying America’s founding promise to the hope for peace in one of World War II’s darkest hours.
This piece is not simply about war. It is about faith under pressure, leadership in crisis, and the belief that even in mud, rain, and uncertainty, peace can still break through.
Artist Message:
I wanted this image to feel like the instant before history turns. The battlefield is dark, wet, and exhausted, but the light above the tanks suggests that something greater is moving through the storm. The Peace Dollar apparition was included as a symbol of what the men were ultimately fighting toward: not conquest, but peace.
